About Cortendo
Cortendo can trace its origin to the early 1980's when Dr. Per Marin began his investigations into the pathophysiology of obesity and related metabolic disorders. The breakthrough came in 1991 when he realized that normalizing the synthesis of the stress hormone, cortisol, addresses an important underlying biological mechanism in the development of Metabolic Syndrome and a major pathological manifestation of type 2 diabetes.
The first patent for the concept of normalizing cortisol synthesis as a treatment for Metabolic Syndrome was filed in 1994. Further research using ketoconazole, a marketed drug provided proof of concept in patients with severe Metabolic Syndrome, and Cortendo was formally established in late 1996.
Clinical trials began in 1999 and culminated with a successful Phase 2a program using an enantiomer of ketoconazole (COR003, also referenced as Normocort) in 2005 through a collaboration with DioBex. Significant expansion of the Cortendo patent portfolio continued during this time period. In 2008, Cortendo reacquired rights to the program with a commitment to initiate a Phase 2b program in Q1 2012.
Cortendo continues to vigorously drive R&D, financing and considerations for in-licensing opportunities in order to keep the development of Normocort and the Company's product pipeline and strategy on schedule. In this regard, Cortendo has evolved into a visible and competitive company in the field of metabolic disorders with novel and high value opportunities in Metabolic Syndrome.
